The Shadow Magician by nanami-yuki The Shadow Magician by nanami-yuki
I haven't posted commission pics for a long time^_^. This the most recent commission drawn for Adrien.

He gave me a long backstory on his character. In this picture, the character has just went through a life changing experience that has made him very miserable. The event even changed his looks; the whites of his eyes turned black and his pupil is white. I liked that the actual instructions for the picture were left vague, so there is a lot of freedom. Which is good and bad because when I sent him the finished version of the picture, I was as nervous as hell cuz I didn't know if he'll like my interpretation.^_^

Most of this is painted with watercolors. The rain is added with photoshop.:floating:

You need to use more value shapes to make it look more realistic, and you could work on the proportion of the arms. Make it a bit more interesting by moving away from the middle. The color is good for the composition, but not consistent. The shadows are not realistic because you have the shadows of the feet going one direction and all the other shadows going opposite directions. Mainly the light, shadows, and proportion need a bit more work. The composition is excellently done. I love the symbols and characters on the wall, but what are they doing for the painting, and are they really needed. Text always draws the attention away from the rest of the piece, so that benefits your piece to draw away from the few mishaps. I do think you have worked a while on this, but keep going. I would love to see what you can really do with this.

When I comissioned Nanami-Yuki, I already knew she would have done a great job otherwise I wouldn't had asked her!

Two things were very important to me
- The Background
- His Face

I did not give her even his name so she had to guess what I did not say to her. I am really satisfied. Maybe I will recomission her for something else. To answer some questions the picture is HUGE in full size. Yes I am VERY satisfied. This picture is really worth a comission.

This is one of the most beautiful water colours I've ever seen!! Those stones looks so realistic, and the light is fantastic. Those darker parts really give depth to the drawing, and the guy is dead-hot! =)
alyssym Featured By Owner Sep 19, 2005
Wow, this is impressive. This time, the sketichiness, the texture and the rough application of the brush storkes actually express the dark aura of the character. The setting such as the cracked walls, the drizzle and the writings on the walls actually complement the way you portray the character (the ripped clothes, the rough expression and his gesture) - they somehow convey this desperate and depressed atmosphere. I cannot help but feeling that the magician is alienated and marginalised, I also sense the shade of loneliness portrayed by the artworks. It seems to me that the character is about to undertake a journey to find where he belongs, a place to find light since he has been in overshadowing place for so long -I feel that the small tunnel and its shadow are the metaphor of his dark past, the fact that he walks out of it is a symbol that represents a transition of his life and the beginning of his vigorous journey. Anyway, that's just my interpretation and I am definately in love with this artwork !
